Специфицирована проектом стандарта IEEE Р1394, основной целью которого является создание спецификаций, обеспечивающих реализацию гибких высокоскоростных малых ВС (ЭВМ) различной топологии и архитектурную совместимость с интерфейсом SCI (Scalable Coherent Interface), известным в прошлом под названием Superbus. Магистраль оптимизирована для использования в качестве эффективного дополнения параллельных системных магистралей в отказоустойчивых системах, обеспечивающих диагностику в индивидуальных модулях, а также для подключения средне- и низкоскоростных периферийных устройств (принтеров, манипуляторов графической информации, сканеров), реализующих стандарт Р1394. Производительность магистрали для версии V.2.0: 2 Мбит/с для фазы арбитража (для ПМ длиной 10 м), 5 Мбит/с для передачи данных. По объединительной панели каркаса передача и прием сигналов ПМ между модулями осуществляются по отдельным линиям; между панелями – по скрученным линиям для передачи дифференциальных сигналов.
